Kenya Power has raised concerns over a growing trend where conmen are targetting innocent Kenyans, promising to connect their electricity connections, lease their lands and offer them job opportunities.

In a Friday notice, the utility firm highlighted seven tricks used to swindle gullible Kenyans of their hard-earned money.

In some instances, Kenya Power detailed that some of the conmen blackmail customers by threatening to cut off the power supply if they did not pay some amount.

Some of the fraudsters were also approaching Kenyans with plots promising that the utility firm was seeking to set up substations or install transformers on their land.

In the process, the targetted Kenyans would then be asked to part ways with money to fast-track the process in return for lucrative deals worth thousands of shillings in the fake land leasing agreements.

"Some of the tricks used by conmen in an attempt to defraud customers include asking customers to make payments directly to them so as to get Kenya Power materials including meters, poles, cables, and transformers, among others.

"Claiming to sell or supply Kenya Power materials to customers to aid in the construction of Illegal lines," read the notice in part.

On the other hand, unemployed Kenyans looking for jobs were given fake job letters after being charged some fees.

Impersonation of Kenya Power staff to harass Kenyans in their homes was also highlighted as an emerging trend.

"To identify Kenya Power staff or contractors, please dial *977# and choose Jua for Sure option. You can also request for staff ID cards from individuals claiming to be Kenya Power staff or contractors.

"While seeking services, customers are reminded not to pay money to individuals but at designated Kenya power offices," Kenya Power advised.

The various Pay Bill numbers for the utility firm include; New connections - 888899, Paying bills - 888888 and Purchase of tokens - 888880.
