Residents at the scene later rushed inside the building to help salvage some of the goods and property.

Gilgil sub-county commander Francis Tumbo confirmed the accident, urging locals to exercise caution while walking on highways or reveling at joints near the roads.

Meanwhile, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari also condoled with the families of the victims.

"What has happened at Kikopey is heart-wrenching. They were all enjoying a beautiful Sunday evening not knowing a dark cloud was about to engulf their space. I am deeply saddened and pray for the families involved," she added.

Information from the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the vehicle was heading to Nakuru when it lost control. NPS added that the trailer damaged a Land Rover, Peugeot 405, and Isuzu Trooper that were in the yard.

The accident comes two days after a matatu rammed into a trailer, also killing five people at Londiani, Kericho County. According to Red Cross Kenya, several others sustained severe injuries.

Police officers who rushed to the scene found passengers stuck inside the vehicle. Alongside emergency service providers, the officers administered first aid to the victims before some were rushed to a nearby hospital for admission.

Londiani and Kikopey areas have claimed over 55 since June this year when a trailer ran over traders and a matatu along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 3,760 people died in road accidents from January to October 15, 2023. Boda riders recorded the highest number of incidents, accounting for 1,213 deaths.
