Residents of Mukurweini in Nyeri County were on Thursday left in shock after two girls drowned in a dam located within the area.

The tragic incident occurred when one of the girls accidentally fell into the dam, in an attempt to save her peer, the other girl also jumped inside the dam leading to her untimely death.

While narrating the ordeal, Veronica Wanjiru, a mother to one of the girls noted she was informed of the situation while at work which prompted her to quickly rush to the scene to confirm if indeed it was her daughter who had died.

“I was called and told that my daughter had died in a dam and that is when I came here and found the situation as it is," Wanjiru noted.

The second girl's uncle Francis Gioko regretted the incident, describing her late niece as a good girl who had lofty dreams.

“The deceased is the daughter to my late sister. She has been an orphan since both her parents passed away. I am heartbroken by this incident”

Speaking at the scene of the incident, Mukurweini MP John Kagucia extended his condolences to the families revealing that he is working with the government to ensure that the dam is fenced to stop a reoccurrence of the same heading into the future.

“ It is very sad for a young school-going child to proceed on holiday only for them to die in such an unfortunate incident such as this one. I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to these families," Kaguchia noted.

"We have said we will come here on Monday with the county disaster management team so that we can assess the situation and start embarking on fencing the dam."

Residents have been warned against allowing their children to play near the dam.

“The Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, village elders, and residents have agreed that no children will be allowed to come and play here, let them play somewhere else because this area has become dangerous," Caroline Were Assistant County Commander Mukurweini noted.

The tragic incident comes barely a week after five people lost their lives after a boat they were traveling in capsized in Lake Victoria at Aneko Beach, Nyatike, in Migori County.

The tragedy happened after heavy wind hit the water body, which ended in the boat overturning and sinking  just when it was on the verge of docking.
