Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has distanced himself from a digital app claiming to have partnered with him in offering loans to Kenyans.
In a statement released on Friday, Sonko alleged that he had no association with the app.
“There is this app moving around on social media claiming they are in partnership with me to give out loans to the public. I wish to distance myself from it,” he stated via his social media pages.
“It's being operated by fraudsters who are trying to swindle money from members of the public,” he added, warning the public of identity theft.
A financial company running an account named ‘Mike Sonko Rescue Loans’ posted a sponsored advertisement on the social platform claiming to be in partnership with Mike Sonko.
The post further showed that the company had partnered with the Mkopo Extra financial aid service app to give needy Kenyans up to Ksh100,000.
“Mkopo Extra, in Partnership with Mike Sonko, is giving loan aid to all Kenyans. Receive up to Ksh 100,000 instantly,” the post which Sonko claimed was fake read.
The ‘financial company’ account has over 2.5k followers on Facebook, with a photo of Sonko holding bundles of money as its profile picture and cover photo.
On its Privacy policy published on the website, the management warned applicants using the app that their details were being collected.
“I want to inform you that whenever you use my Service, in the case of an error in the app I collect data and information (through third party products) on your phone called Log Data,”
“This Log Data may include information such as your device Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, device name, operating system version, the configuration of the app when utilizing my Service, the time and date of your use of the Service, and other statistics,” the policy reads.
