An eyewitness in a grisly accident that left ten dead at Mbooni in Makueni County has revealed that brake failure was the likely probable cause of the crash.
Speaking to the press on Saturday when the crash occurred, the witness revealed that the matatu experienced a break failure while the driver was attempting to negotiate a corner.
Despite the driver's efforts to control the vehicle, it lost control causing the vehicle to overturn resulting in the death of 10 passengers.
Meanwhile, another ten sustained injuries and were rushed to Mbooni Sub County Hospital. Two of the injured were in critical condition.
According to Mbooni West Deputy County Commissioner Stanlas Apwoka, the 14-seater matatu was carrying excess passengers when the accident occurred.
The commissioner further noted that the matatu, which was carrying 20 passengers, was headed to Machakos from Kikima.
The Commissioner thus observed that the accident was self-initiated and launched investigations into the incident.
Makueni Chief Health Officer Steven Dolo confirmed receiving ten patients from the accident noting that two of the victims were in critical condition and were rushed to theatre.
According to the health officer, three ambulances have been dispatched in case any of the patients require referral for special services with Dolo also noting that additional blood had been supplied to the hospital to aid in treating the victims.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo condoled with the families of the deceased.
According to the governor, drivers should avoid carrying excess passengers especially during this festive season to avoid such incidents.
"To those who have lost their loved ones and their family members, on behalf of my family and me as well, I express my sympathy and for those who are nursing injuries will ensure that they receive treatment fully," Mutula denoted.
"I want to take this opportunity to caution drivers, especially during this rainy season and festivities, against carrying excess passengers."
The accident comes against the backdrop of Interior Permanent Secretary Raymond Omollo's warning to motorists advising them to exercise caution, especially during the December Holidays with the PS further calling on drivers to observe traffic laws
"The Ministry calls on all drivers to be conscientious road users, demonstrating care and consideration for the well-being of everyone sharing the highways," PS Omollo stated.
