Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Raymond Omollo has called on all drivers to exercise caution amid the influx of road accidents synonymous with the December festivities.
The PS, on Thursday, asked drivers to observe traffic laws and also urged other road users to contribute to the safety of every individual.
"The Ministry calls on all drivers to be conscientious road users, demonstrating care and consideration for the well-being of everyone sharing the highways," PS Omollo stated.
"With the El Nino floods still upon us, the public is advised to stay informed, through the National El Niño Emergency & Disaster Response Command Centre, about weather conditions and cut-off roads to plan journeys accordingly and avoid unnecessary frustrations," he added.
According to the PS, heavy rainfall can impede visibility, thus, drivers should adjust to driving and timing weather conditions.
He further warned drivers endangering lives by driving under the influence that they would face severe legal consequences should they be found guilty of flouting traffic laws.
During the December holidays, police raised concerns over the increased number of revellers partying outside gazetted areas and legalised clubs and restaurants. In Kiambu, County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha banned what he argued were unlicensed ‘Park n Vibe’ parties held in tea plantations and by the roadside.
In line with the Nkanatha's directive, PS Omollo urged revellers to desist from drinking and driving and rather have designated drivers or alternative transportation.
"The safety of every road user is a shared responsibility, and the consequences of reckless driving can be severe. We implore all drivers to prioritize safety, adhere to traffic regulations, and make responsible choices behind the wheel," PS Omollo further clarified.
He called on passengers not to rush to arrive at their respective destinations but to exercise patience and utmost caution so as to "arrive alive and arrive safely".
His advisory comes a few hours after 40 passengers were injured in an incident where a 66 Bus seater crushed in Londiani, along the Kericho - Nakuru highway.
As per a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the bus was speeding to Busia from Nairobi when it swerved to avoid colliding with a private vehicle that stopped suddenly.
No fatality was recorded in the accident, contrary to another carnage which claimed 55 lives at the blackspot in June this year.
