A prison officer in Kericho drew out his gun and held a barmaid at gunpoint after allegedly finding her in the company of another man.
According to a police report accessed by Kenyans.co.ke, the officer was involved in a wrangle with the 25-year-old barmaid said to be his girlfriend before he left the premises in a hurry.
He reportedly rushed to his home in Mjengo, picked up an A G3 Rifle and bordered the next ride back to the bar to confront his girlfriend.
"He cocked his gun, threatening to kill the girl," stated the police officers in their report.
The bar manager, who was not inside the restaurant as the scene unfolded, was forced to report the matter urgently to the nearest authorities.
Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers based in Kericho were immediately deployed to negotiate hostage release and disarm the officer.
"Arriving at the bar, they sweet-talked and persuaded him to surrender his firearm.
"More police officers were brought in to scale the perimeter building just in case he opened fire," the police report added.
Police lauded the detectives who de-escalated the situation, adding that no casualties were recorded in the incident.
20 rounds of ammunition recovered from the incident were recorded as exhibits for further investigations into the case.
Police, however, did not clarify whether the prison officer was detained for questioning nor if he was guided to undergo counselling.
Kenya Prisons Service had yet to respond to the incident by the time of publishing this article.
