Travellers plying the Nairobi-Mombasa highway were left stranded for over nine hours after a traffic snarl-up was experienced in a section of the road.
According to long-distance drivers plying the busy highway, the gridlock occurred at Mtito Andei and Voi.
Reports indicated that the incident began minutes past 1 am on Tuesday.
The drivers, therefore, warned its clients that there would be further delays in departure and arrival time as traffic marshalls and police move to restore normalcy on the highway.
At the time of publication, the major cause for the snarl-up was yet to be identified.
However, a section of the travellers attributed the snarl-up to the increased travel witnessed during the festivities.
"Dear customers, we're experiencing service delays affecting our morning schedule from both Mombasa and Nairobi and some of our afternoon schedules from Mombasa.
"The delay has been occasioned by the huge traffic jam we experienced overnight in the Tsavo area. We deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused," Mash Poa advised.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) also raised concern over the incident, given that buses ferrying goods to neighbouring countries were caught up in the traffic snarl-up.
"Between Mtitu Andei and Voi, traffic has not been moving since 1 am. If you are going to Mombasa from Nairobi and vice versa today, plan accordingly," the association advised.
Notably, traffic snarl-ups have been witnessed in the last two weeks as Kenyans intensify their travels for the festivities.
Last week, travellers plying the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway also spent eight hours in traffic after a lorry broke down at Mai Mahiu.
