Motorists were stranded at Mai Mahiu on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Saturday night.

Some of the motorists who shared their experiences online stated that they had been stuck on the stretch for hours without any sign of traffic police officers being deployed to the scene to restore normalcy.

Most of the motorists complained that the snarl-up was worsened by rogue drivers who took it upon themselves to overlap rendering the whole situation on the single-carriage road a mess.

Some revealed that they had been stuck in traffic since 10 pm with many opting to switch off their engines as they were already resigned to the fate that they would be spending the night on the road.

"This could be the worst traffic snarl-up I've ever been in, six hours from Kimende to the flyover and still stuck," media personality Ken Wakuraya remarked in a statement.

Many called upon Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to initiate plans to expand the road to enable it to accommodate the huge number of vehicles that ply the route.

The motorists further called for more traffic officers to be deployed to the area to prevent similar chaos from occurring in the future.

A section of motorists further complained that traffic at Mai Mahiu is slowly becoming the norm as more and more cases continue being reported periodically.

Others pointed out that such traffic has become normal during the weekends when Kenyans travel across the country.

Meanwhile, other residents speculated that an earlier accident involving two lorries which occurred at Kijabe was the cause of the traffic gridlock.

However, the police are yet to confirm that as the cause of the problem.

A few weeks ago, motorists found themselves in the same predicament along Mombasa Road after a trailer accident forced them to camp on the road for hours.
