Moja Expressway on Tuesday announced the temporary closure of a section of the Nairobi Expressway slated to take effect on Wednesday, December 27.
In a statement, the company explained that the closure affecting the entrance at Mlolongo will be effected from 7 am to 7 pm to pave the way for scheduled maintenance.
"Due to scheduled pavement maintenance from Mlolongo Toll Station entrance to Syokimau Toll Station, we will temporarily close the Mlolongo Entrance," read part of the statement.
However, motorists were informed that the maintenance would not affect the Mlolongo Exit. Moja Expressway further apologised for the inconvenience caused.
Motorists who frequent the route were urged to use the Syokimau Entrance when heading to Nairobi CBD from Mlolongo.
Notably, the section in Mlolongo had been vandalised in July by protesters during the nationwide demonstrations led by the opposition. Rowdy crowds destroyed sections of the road including flower pots on the side.
The act forced the temporary closure of the road as Moja Expressway halted operations at the Mlolongo, Syokimau, and SGR stations.
Following the destruction of the road infrastructure, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that the government had projected that the repairs would cost Ksh700 million.
Murkomen regretted that the vandals had come with equipment to cut copper wires at the toll stations. He claimed that the attacks were pre-planned.
The Nairobi Expressway which was officially opened in mid-2022 has offered motorists an excellent alternative to avoid heavy traffic in Nairobi.
Some 10 million motorists had used the Nairobi Expressway by February 2023 since it was opened according to Moja Expressway Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Zhao.
The multi-billion project commissioned by former President Uhuru Kenyatta was aimed at revolutionising the transport sector.
A new exit is currently being constructed that will lead motorists to the Greenpark Terminal in the Central Business District (CBD). It is expected to be completed in mid-January 2024 according to Murkomen.
"The Nairobi Expressway is a shining monument to what Private-Public Partnerships can do," the CS stated last week.
