A Kenyan woman was on Thursday, December 28, arrested at an airport in India.
The Kenyan, allegedly smuggling cocaine worth Ksh 281 million (Rs 14.90 crore), was apprehended at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
According to a report released on Friday, December 29, by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the woman was flying from Nairobi to Mumbai.
DRI officers acted on intelligence after receiving information about the particular passenger.
After a thorough search, the DRI officers recovered 1490 grams of white powdery substance purported to be cocaine from the woman’s luggage.
"The ingenious concealment of the drugs involved two black polythene packets cleverly placed within a hair conditioner bottle and a body wash bottle," the report stated.
The passenger was arrested, as the officers launched further investigations into the matter.
“The passenger has been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985 and subsequently remanded to judicial custody,” the report added.
Several Kenyans in 2023 were arrested in drug-related cases in foreign countries, as authorities promised to crack down on cartels.
In June this year, Indian officials arrested a Kenyan woman who smuggled 2.5 kilos of cocaine, approximately valued at Ksh 380 million.
The woman had arrived at the New Delhi airport via Addis Ababa, with the substance in whisky bottles.
On September 24, a Kenyan car dealer was arrested in Sri Lanka, at the Bandaranaike International Airport with 4 kilograms of cocaine estimated worth Ksh 24 million.
