Police officers in Eldoret have apprehended two suspects in connection with the murder of Kenyan-born athlete Benjamin Kiplagat.
According to Moiben Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal, one of the suspects was arrested in Uasin Gishu County, while the second was traced to Trans Nzoia County.
A knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, was recovered from one of the suspects.
He confirmed that the police relied on CCTV footage on the night of the murder to bring the suspects to book.
The two suspects will be arraigned in court on Tuesday to face charges over Kiplagat's murder.
Police will be seeking to unravel the motive behind killing the athlete - who had stamped his dominance in the athletics industry primarily in the men's 3,000 metres Steeplechase event.
Kiplagat was found dead inside a black Toyota Hilux in the wee hours of Sunday morning while on his way home. Officers explained that the culprits intercepted the athlete's journey using a motorcycle.
Detectives believe that the suspects proceeded to commit the heinous crime and fled the scene.
Okal noted that the two suspects have been involved in various criminal incidents recently.
He confirmed that police officers were determined to unravel the motive behind the incident and arrest those involved.
According to police, the athlete was fond of attending late-night meetings with fellow athletes in Elgeyo Marakwet and thereafter proceeded to head home. The officers believe the suspects tracked Kiplagat's routine before committing the crime.
Following the incident, World Athletics issued a statement, noting that the industry had lost one of the top-tier athletes in East Africa.
