Footage from CCTV cameras at a Mombasa business centre on Saturday captured a man being harassed and beaten up by a group of young men for unknown reasons.

In the video reportedly from Old Town, the gang armed with crude weapons entered a shop before emerging from the establishment roughing up a man they forced out of the centre.

During the confrontation, the gang forced the victim onto the ground and hit him with the weapons before he managed to flee in the opposite direction.

However, the relentless gang went after him in numbers.

During the commotion, the victim narrowly escaped being run over by the tuk-tuks in the area as he attempted to run for his dear life.

As the assault continued, locals seemed unbothered by the incident with most staring at the man helplessly pleading for mercy.

In the one-minute video, the residents were seen going on about their activities as vehicles routinely passed through the area.

The young men could be seen running away with their weapons after beating up the victim leading to questions as to how common such incidents are in the Coastal region.

Old Town has been known to harbor gangs comprising of young men feared for terrorising residents in broad daylight. The gangs are known to act with impunity without fear of arrest.

In videos that went viral in 2022, a gang of over 10 men was seen trooping the streets and looting from anyone in the vicinity. Victims could be heard screaming for help but that did nothing to get them much-needed help.

Reportedly, the gang targets women, children, and the elderly since they cannot fight back. Some of the gang members are armed with weapons which they use to threaten their victims.

Residents called upon the local authorities to intervene leading to a crackdown on the illegal sects wreaking havoc in the city.

Locals believe that increased gang violence is a direct consequence of drug abuse and lack of employment which pushes youth into crime.
