The government on Tuesday brought down former Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed's home in Kakamega County.

Reports indicate that the house located in the posh Milimani Estate was demolished to pave the way for the construction of President William Ruto's Affordable Housing project.

A contingent of demolition personnel arrived at the scene and began knocking down the residence which the diplomat's brother reportedly acquired in 2019.

While narrating the incident, the caretaker of the house disclosed that the contingent entered the homestead through the fence before proceeding to demolish the house.

The residence which is registered under Lucas Nandih Shamalla was brought down in the full glare of the public despite an initial court order calling for an immediate halt to the planned demolitions.

On October 11 last year, the Environment and Land Court in Kakamega issued orders stopping the government from demolishing the posh house pending a hearing and determination of a case filed by Shamalla.

The Interior and Coordination of National Government PS, Regional Commissioner Western, and the Attorney General were listed as the respondents to the case in which the owner had filed.

On November 30 last year, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa was forced to clarify the demolitions which he distanced himself from, this was after a section of residents faulted the County Government for demolishing houses without notice.

“Regarding the ongoing demolitions of property in the Milimani area within Kakamega town, I wish to state that we were not part of those activities,” the Governor clarified.

Among those who were also affected by the demolitions besides the CS include Billionaire Jaswant Singh Rai, the chairman of the West Kenya Sugar Company.

On December 1, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga vowed to move to court in a bid to squash the position of the Kakamega County Regional Commissioner who is claimed to have ordered the ongoing demolitions.

While addressing residents in Kakamega, Odinga termed the Regional Commissioner's order as unconstitutional and therefore illegal.

“This is a relic of colonialism that we must remove, and we will go to court to declare this so-called provincial administration unconstitutional. County commissioners have no powers to interfere with the governor. The so-called regional commissioners are illegal, and there are no regions in our government structure," the former Prime Minister noted.

“This is an act of brutality that has been meted against our people here in Kakamega. It is terrible that this should be happening under the administration of a government that came to power promising to be pro-people."
