The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has stepped in to resolve the heavy snarl-up on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway that lasted for hours.

The authority indicated that the snarl-up that occurred on Sunday around the Naivasha area was triggered by a non-injury accident.

Impatient motorists, however, began overlapping aggressively creating a gridlock.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority notifies the public of a traffic snarl-up at the Kinale section along Naivasha - Rironi (A8) Road. This has been occasioned by the high volume of traffic as motorists rush back to the city," KeNHA stated.

"Earlier there was registered a non-injury accident at the section and motorists became impatient and started to overlap causing a gridlock. The police have cleared the accident scene and are on the ground trying to marshal traffic."

The authority, as a result, asked the motorists to use alternative routes including the Rironi - Mai Mahiu - Naivasha stretch.

Earlier footage recorded by a person travelling in a helicopter showed that the gridlock stretched for several kilometers and in some instances, vehicles had stopped moving.

The snarl-up had been in place since at least 3 pm.

"We are stuck at Nakuru-Nairobi way because Kenyans lack discipline, literally the way to Nakuru is closed," observed one traveler.

"It's high time a superhighway is constructed along Nairobi-Nakuru or at least a dual carriageway," stated Sereti Tonkei.

In the just-concluded festive season, the highway was frequently used by Kenyans travelling to various destinations leading to several instances of traffic snarl-ups with at least five other instances recorded since mid-December.

A few days to Christmas Day, a gridlock began at 7:00 am lasting till well in the afternoon. It was blamed on motorists who were overlapping.

Notable leaders including Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale were among those affected by the snarl-up.

"Stuck in a kilometres-long traffic jam as we snake our way to Kakamega. It's consoling that a dual carriageway of the Nairobi to Mau Summit Junction is in our development blueprint," he stated at the time.
