Ruto Appoints Tom Mshindi as KBC Chairperson

President William Ruto has appointed former Nation Media Group (NMG) Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director, Tom Mshindi as the chairperson of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) Board.

According to the Gazette Notice published on Friday, the veteran media manager will serve for three years with effect from January 19, 2024.

President Ruto further revoked the appointment of Benjamin Maingi.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 7 (3) of the State Corporations Act and section 4 (1) (a) of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint- Tom Mshindi Nyamancha to be the Chairperson of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Board, for three (3) years, with effect from January 19, 2024," Ruto directed.

Mshindi has amassed over 25 years of experience in the media industry, with his notable contributions primarily taking place at NMG.

Throughout his career, he has held different positions as a writer, editor, columnist, university lecturer, United Nations (UN) editor and field communications officer, a UN consultant and a managing director.

Mshindi's journey in the media industry began in 2009 when he assumed the position of Managing Director at Nation. The role entailed providing strategic leadership in the newspaper division.

Through this, the company managed to attain a profit before tax of Ksh2.1 billion in 2010, a record for the company at the time.

AT NMG, he climbed through the ranks and assumed the position of Chief Operating Officer in 2013 where he provided overall management and strategic leadership at the company. 

Two years later, he became the Group Editor-in-Chief, leading a team of senior editors in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda to produce quality content for NMG products in print, broadcast and digital.

In 2019, Mshindi opened a consulting firm, Tom Mshindi Consulting, to provide his expertise and skills in the media to provide solutions to corporate companies. 

Following his tenure at NMG, Mshindi was appointed as a Director of Partnerships and Resource Mobilisation in Trans Nzoia County by Governor George Natembeya.
