A black Lexus, that was part of a convoy heading towards the burial of the son of Kibwezi East Member of Parliament Jessica Mbalu was involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the Lexus in a damaged state on the side of the road.
Witnesses at the scene explained to Kenyans.co.ke that the Lexus en route to Makueni rolled severally at the Emali-Sultan road on Saturday morning.
Moments later, nearby onlookers rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants inside the vehicle. Emergency service providers aboard an ambulance also arrived at the scene to assist the locals in administering first aid to the injured.
At the time of publishing this article, no deaths had been reported.
The convoy was heading to Kithasyu, Kibwezi East for Benedict Musyoka Mbalu's burial. The Kibwezi MP's son died in a tragic accident in Nairobi as a result of the heavy rains this past Sunday.
Speaker Moses Wetangula was among the top government leaders who condoled the MP.
"My words to you are inadequate. Accept my deepest condolences and that of the Parliament fraternity for the loss of your dear son, Benedict Musyoka Mbalu. Now like never before, our thoughts and sympathies are with you and your family. We are praying for your strength during this painful moment of mourning your dear son," Wetangula eulogised.
Following the demise, various leaders called for Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to ensure proper maintenance of the roads across the country.
"You never know, maybe it was a slippery road and the only thing I can call upon the Ministry of Roads to make sure that roads in Nairobi are well maintained," Mavoko MP Patrick Makau stated.
The latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded 84 fatalities as of January 7, 2024, compared to 72 deaths in the same period last year.
From the data, pedestrians were the most affected with 31 fatalities, followed by motorcyclists (23), drivers (7) and pillion passengers (6).
"The annual socioeconomic losses in Kenya due to road crashes are estimated to be more than Ksh450 billion. There is a need to sustainably finance road safety programmes and cost-effective safety investments in Kenya and over the next decade," NTSA explained.
The Authority has since launched a campaign titled #UsalamaBarabarani to sensitise motorists on adherence to road safety rules.
