Drama ensued at the Myanga Police Station in Kimaeti Sub-County, Bungoma County on Friday night, January 19 after a police officer manning the station cells shot dead a suspect who attempted to escape.

According to a po ice report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the incident began when one of the officers manning the cells left his colleague on the guard in a bid to go and relieve himself.

Moments later, the officer who remained behind was triggered by a strange commotion inside the cells and quickly ran to establish the cause of the noise.

He used his spotlight to find his way into the cells but was allegedly obstructed by one suspect who tried to snatch his firearm and in the process succeeded in escaping.

The officer immediately fired six rounds of ammunition to contain the escaping suspect but his efforts proved futile as he escaped unhurt.

Upon returning to the cells, he was reportedly attacked by another prisoner who was hiding on top of the ceiling.

However, this time round, he did not relent as he gunned down the suspect who succumbed on the spot.

After investigations, it was established that the two suspects had been held on accusation of burglary and stealing.

"The scene was photographed, processed and the rifle, make AK47 with a magazine loaded with 24 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition kept as Exhibit," noted the police.

In a similar incident on November 23 last year, detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) gunned down two gang leaders linked to a criminal syndicate terrorising locals in Kibra, Nairobi.

During the operation, one of the suspects drew his gun and began shooting at the detectives. This triggered the ever-agile sleuths to respond with finality, killing the duo.

“The MP5 and AK47 Rifle were recovered at Hawinga from the house of a suspect who escaped the police dragnet, while two suspects were fatally wounded,” the National Police Service communicated in a statement.
