A Nairobi-bound bus with 20 occupants burst into flames in the wee hours of Monday, at 1 am along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in the Kanga Area, Makueni County.

Reports indicate that the ill-fated bus which is said to have departed from Mombasa burst into flames near the Tsavo National Park. However, no casualties were recorded.

Confirming the incident, the Eastern Regional Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan commented that law enforcement officers were able to rescue all the occupants who emerged from the accident in one piece.

The passengers, with the help of the police, were also able to retrieve their luggage from the bus before the fire escalated into an inferno.

Investigations into what caused the accident and whether there was possible negligence by the bus company are still underway.

After the passengers were rescued, arrangements were made to have another Public Service Vehicle (PSV) ferry the passengers to their destination.

Cases of buses bursting into flames have become rampant recently with numerous cases being reported being in different parts of the country.

The last case involved a bus that burst into flames along the Nairobi- Nakuru Highway on December 12, 2023.

The accident is said to have occurred after the rear tire exploded. However, just like in the Monday case, no injuries were recorded.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), negligence is one of the main causes of road accidents in the country.

NTSA has consistently urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles undergo servicing before embarking on a journey to ensure they are always in peak condition.

The body responsible for road safety has also urged motorists to always adhere to traffic rules to avoid causing any accidents which have claimed lives.
