The National Lands Commission (NLC) on Friday published the names of more than 560 landlords likely to be affected by the upcoming Kabarnet-Rumuruti 123kv Transmission line.
In the Gazette Notice, NLC which was acting on behalf of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) announced that the government intended to acquire a wayleave corridor on parcels of lands owned by the landlords.
In the notice, the Commission therefore told the landowners that the State planned to construct an electricity transmission line, a public project, consisting of the construction of towers and conductors overlying their land.
NLC further revealed that details of compensation for all the affected individuals will be addressed directly to the land owners.
"Plans for the affected land may be inspected during office hours at the following offices: National Land Commission, Ardhi House 3rd floor Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi; KETRACO at Kawi House, South C, NAIROBI; Baringo and Laikipia Counties Lands Offices," read the notice signed by National Land Commission Chairman Gershom Otachi.
Most of the affected individuals own parcels measuring less than 1 hectare in Baringo County save for a handful.
4.6 hectares of the land in question are part of Lariak Forest Reserve, 1.8 hectares belong to Samuel Murimi Macharia and 1.2 hectares belong to Joel Kipchirchir Kiprono.
20.7 hectares in Eldume and 23.6 hectares in Ol Ng'arua Swamp remain unadjudicated while 8.4 hectares are classified as Logumgum Grazing Land.
Earlier reports indicated that the transmission line, which is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Korean Government, is part of five projects collectively valued at Ksh14 billion.
Originally, the projects will cover Kabarnet, Rumuruti, Narok, Bomet, Weru, Malindi, Nanyuki and Kilifi.
“A few months ago, the African Development Bank and the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) jointly conducted an appraisal mission in Kenya to finance the Transmission Network Improvement Project,” read a procurement report made public in June 2022.
“Both the African Development Bank and the Republic of Korea will approve the financing in November 2022."
When complete, the projects are expected to boost access to electricity which is part of President William Ruto's green energy drive.
