Learning activities were on Wednesday paralysed at Kaptumo Primary School in Kabarnet, Baringo County after teachers and parents staged protests.

The protesting teachers and parents demanded answers as to why the Ministry of Education was yet to establish a section for Junior Secondary School (JSS) students.

The teachers vowed to close down the school until the Ministry of Education resolves the matter.

“Up to date, we have never known why there are no JSS students. We want to know why JSS is not in Kaptumo Primary School, and that is why the parents standing behind me have come demanding their rights,” noted one of the teachers.

Despite the school having been duly registered by the Ministry of Education it was yet to receive any grade 7 and 8 students.

Speaking on the matter, one of the teachers disclosed that JSS students who were initially set to join the school were transferred to a neighbouring institution.

The teacher also faulted the Ministry for allocating JSS textbooks to the school but with no students to use them.

"With me, I have textbooks from the Ministry of Education and these books were designated for this school," lamented a teacher.

"These books are coming directly to Kaptumo Primary School, they even have stamps. So we are surprised that we are getting books but with no students."

One parent while venting his frustrations, vowed to travel from Baringo to Nairobi to the Ministry of Education offices to enquire why the issue was yet to be resolved.

"What does the Ministry of Education do? Recently they were here and held four to five meetings, why don't they answer our complaints, if not, I will travel to Nairobi," claimed a parent.

On January 19, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu while releasing the Kenya Primary Schools Education Assessment (KPSEA) results directed that all students who sat for the exams be allowed to join Grade 7. He insisted that they be enrolled in the Junior Secondary Schools in their respective primary schools where they attended Grade 1-6.
