Transport was interrupted along the Thika-Mangu Road on Sunday evening as boda boda operators lit bonfires in protest.
Angry operators resorted to lighting bonfires, to protest a hit-and-run accident which involved one of their members.
During the protest, the boda operators, told journalists that their colleague was feared dead, after a vehicle, which later fled the scene, rammed into his motorcycle.
According to the boda boda operators, the incident occurred at around 7 P.M on Sunday night.
Moments after the incident, motorists plying the route, were urged to avoid using the stretch as the riders had barricaded it and lit bonfires.
“Approach Sijas Ngoingwa along Thika-Mang'u Road with caution. Angry bodaboda operators have lit bonfires on the road following an earlier fatal accident involving a hit-and-run motor vehicle and motorcycle,” a resident cautioned.
However, the area's residents are up in arms, over the protests stating that the boda boda operators' actions would destroy the recently tarmacked road.
“Spoiling the newly built road that was just tarmacked,” stated one of the residents.
They are also calling upon the boda boda riders to find alternative ways to solve the matter, stating that the bonfires were not a solution.
The road whose construction ended earlier this year, had been under construction since 2019, having initially stalled for three years.
In September 2023, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen instructed the the contractor working on the project to finish and deliver it before the end of the first quarter of 2024.
This comes at a time when Boda Boda operators have been in the spotlight after taking the law into their hands on several occasions.
For instance, on January 18 this year, 20 boda boda operators were arrested in Kitengela after stoning a car whose driver had hit several residents, while attempting to flee from the scene of the initial accident.
