An armed robber was gunned down in Githurai on Wednesday evening after engaging in a fierce shootout with the police.
The deceased, said to be part of a gang that was terrorising residents in the area, was ambushed by police while they were allegedly robbing pedestrians
Reports indicated that the armed robbers pulled out a gun and attempted to fire at the police while evading arrest.
However, the police engaged them in a hot pursuit and nailed down one as two others escaped.
The deceased was alleged to have dived into a nearby river after he was separated from his gang, but the police followed suit and gunned him down.
His body was moved to the City Mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
A pistol was recovered from the robber alongside 2 bullets set to be subjected to a ballistic analysis to determine if it was used in past crimes.
Nairobi County Police boss Adamson Bungei warned that the two other gang members were on the run, with police tracing their movements within the Nairobi metropolis.
"I want to send a warning to those who keep on causing chaos and stealing from members of the public that their days are numbered," Bungei stated.
Area residents lamented that the robber was part of a gang that accosts pedestrians in Roysambu, Zimmerman, and Kamiti Road.
They lauded the police for the ambush but urged them to increase surveillance to reduce the crime rate.
Bungei assured the residents that the county is well equipped with police officers deployed across Nairobi estates to deal with criminals.
In a separate incident that happened this week on February 11, police managed to arrest two suspected robbers in a supermarket in Nairobi.
According to reports, the police acted on a tip-off from the supermarket attendants. However, one of the suspects managed to escape on a motorbike.
