Traffic snarl-up was witnessed along Mombasa Road and the Nairobi Expressway on Friday evening after a trailer overturned and covered sections of the two highways around Syokimau.
According to one of our lead digital strategists, Brian Muuo, who was headed home at the time of the accident, the trailer which was plying along Mombasa Road landed on the barrier of the Expressway and crossed over to a section of the 27-kilometre road.
The incident happened near the Gateway Mall and affected motorists who were leaving Nairobi and headed in the direction of Machakos.
"The trailer was from Nairobi and headed to Machakos. The incident happened just near the Gateway Mall. Police were already at the scene by the time we got there," he stated.
Shortly after the accident, the police were tasked with controlling the traffic as they waited for the truck to be towed from the road.
Following the incident, motorists who were using the Expressway were also advised to use alternative exits given the delays that were experienced.
Motorists were also guided to approach the area with caution to avoid any further accidents.
"Going to Syokimau and beyond, a truck has just overturned before Gateway Mall causing traffic all the way to Cabanas. Use Expressway to Syokimau. Don't exit at JKIA," another motorist advised on X, formerly Twitter.
The cause of the accident is yet to be known, however, reports indicate that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle.
