Two people lost their lives on Monday during work hours after a crane collapsed on them in the Makutano area in Meru County.
Imenti North OCPD Ezekiel Chepkwony confirmed the incident to the press but it is not clear if other people sustained injuries.
The incident occurred at around noon.
Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the deceased were going about construction activity on a storey building of more than five floors.
Kenya Red Cross, in a statement, noted that it had sent a response team to the scene to attend to the affected individuals.
"Crane collapse reported in Makutano, Meru County. Response teams are en route to the scene. Updates to follow," Kenya Red Cross stated.
The accident has turned attention to safety at blue-collar worksites succeeding another incident in October 2023 when a 42-year-old man lost his life after a stone fell on him at a construction site in Eastleigh.
The death was the second in a matter of months at a construction site in the area, raising concerns over regulators who are supposed to check whether developers meet all safety requirements.
In June last year, four workers also died under mysterious circumstances at a construction site in Eastleigh.
According to the residents, the last victim passed away after jumping off the storey building.
Many of the workers at the site were foreigners from Uganda and Congo making it difficult for their families to seek justice.
Workers and visitors to construction sites are required to put on safety gear including helmets, coats, and boots to protect them from falling debris and other hazards.
