Three young men were on Tuesday lynched by an angry mob at Manyatta in Kisumu after being caught red handed attempting to steal a motorbike from a rider.
According to witnesses, the trio including two who sat for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations were cornered by a group of residents who traced them to their house within Manyatta Estate after the botched theft attempt.
The three are said to have been close friends and were living together.
It was at this point that the mob beat them heavily before setting their bodies ablaze.
Officers from Kasagam Police Station got wind of the incident and quickly rushed to the scene only to find the lifeless bodies of the trio burnt beyond recognition.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
Investigations into the grisly murder of the three have since commenced with police warning the public against taking the law into their hands.
It is not the first time that suspects in a botched robbery have been lynched by an irate mob.
In a similar incident in November last year, two robbers were cornered and beaten to death before being burnt in Pangani, Nairobi.
A police report revealed the duo was caught after attempting to snatch a mobile phone from a resident who had just completed shopping at the town centre and was heading home.
"The fire had engulfed both the victims and burned them beyond recognition," read part of a police report.
The two bodies were ferried to the city mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
