Traffic in the Nairobi Central Business District was temporarily paralysed on Tuesday as students from the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) staged protests.

The students occupied the road along Haile Sellasie Avenue while chanting and lying across the typically busy road, forcing pedestrians and motorists to seek alternative routes.

Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke depicted motorists stranded and vehicles parked at a safe distance as the students occupied the road to vent out their frustrations.

Reports indicate that the learners were protesting the closure of their student centre which has remain shut for over 2 weeks.

The students questioned why more has not been done to open the centre considering they are heavily reliant on the spot to purchase educational materials. This, they pointed out, has negatively affected their studies.

Further, the learners lamented the lack of a students union observing that student union elections have been postponed with no reason provided.

Police were not present at the scene when the students were protesting.

Similarly, the university’s management is yet to comment on the strike and the postponement of the elections.

In October 2023, the University was also faced with another strike as lecturers protested over delayed salaries.

The lecturers staged protests in the Nairobi CBD, issuing demands to the university to disburse their salaries.

At the time, the lecturers complained that the university had failed to release their September salaries venting out their frustrations since  October was approaching its tail end.

“We want to know where they took this money that the government gave them for September salary,” one of the protesting lecturers could be heard saying.
