On Tuesday, February 27, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehended the primary suspect in a gold scam investigation implicating two Malaysian nationals.

As per a statement issued by the Directorate, the suspect was detained at the Milimani Law Courts while appearing before a Judge for another gold scam case, for which he was out on bond.

The operations Support Detectives revealed that they have been pursuing the suspect since December 27, 2023, in the near-success gold scam orchestrated by an eight-member gang.

The gang, in December last year, was ambushed in a Lavington-based apartment, while in the middle of a plan to defraud two Malaysian nationals in a 50kg fake gold scam.

Upon investigation, the officers established that KMN was the tenant of the premises in which the gang operated, having entered a tenancy agreement with the landlord to use the property as a residential house.

The suspect was on Wednesday arraigned before Judge Ondieki at the Milimani High Court, where he was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and an attempt of the same.

The court set the case to be mentioned on March 13, after KMN pleaded not guilty to the two charges. The court further released him on a Ksh3 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Ksh1 million.

In December last year, while acting on a tip from the Kilimani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer, DCI officers ambushed seven people at an apartment in the Lavington area, after following them from another residential area where they had picked buyers for an ongoing deal.

"The scene was processed and several exhibits recovered including metallic boxes, 84 gold coated metallic bars, smelting tools, computers, documents & stamps from an international company and several uniforms from the security firm," DCI noted at the time.

The detectives also seized five vehicles believed to have been stolen in various parts of the country.

In a separate incident, DCI officers in February 17 arrested four suspected cryptocurrency scammers, working with the GHash mining company, after several people reported having lost money through the same.

Upon arrest, the officers recovered 1,136 SIM cards from three different mobile service providers, eight mobile phones, a tablet, and a laptop, recorded as exhibits to aid in the investigation.
