A devastating fire incident caused by a gas explosion has left numerous residents in Kisumu homeless.

The fire broke out on February 28, engulfing several properties in the Manyatta estate near Kisumu Polytechnic.

Residential blocks and student hostels were destroyed as residents attempted to contain the blaze while awaiting authorities.

Most of the affected victims were reportedly students from the nearby institution.

The Kisumu fire brigade arrived at the scene later and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the estate.

Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, and individuals with burn injuries were treated by the St John Ambulance team, who also responded to the alarm.

Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the explosion.

This incident happened barely a month after a gas explosion in Embakasi brought down several properties rendering over 271 families homeless.

On February 2, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed the incident that occurred near the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport recording over 165 casualties and three fatalities.

Since then the owner of the gas plant has been arrested and later released on a cash bail as his travel document withheld.

However, the affected residents have received aid from several well-wishers including the county government, Kenyan Redcross together with several politicians and philanthropists.

The government also waived the victim's rent for the next three months from the time of the incident.
