Multiple Fatalities Feared in Bus Accident in Busia

Several people are feared dead and scores are nursing injuries after a Mombasa-bound Tahmeed bus was involved in a head-on collision with a tanker around the Mundika area in Busia County.

Reports suggest that the tanker ignited into flames after colliding with the bus, which was travelling from Busia to Mombasa.

Witnesses present at the scene claim that nearly all passengers on the bus have tragically perished in the incident.

As of the time of publishing this article, bystanders had congregated at Mundika market in an attempt to rescue any survivors.

Videos circulating online showed charred remains of bodies at the scene which were strewn at the scene. 

Smoke engulfed the air from the tanker as the rescuers attempted to put out the fire using a hosepipe. 

The County Government Fire and Rescue Services team was sent out to assist in salvaging the remnants of the scene.

Following the incident, the Motorists Association of Kenya condemned the tragic explosion, noting that urgent action needed to be taken to prevent future accidents. 

"We are shocked and saddened by the tragic crash explosion involving travellers after an oil tanker and a Mombasa-bound bus head-on collision at Mundika, Busia, rescue efforts are underway."

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah also expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. 

"It is with shock and disbelief that I have received the sad news of the tragic road accident between an oil tanker and a PSV bus bound for Mombasa in the Mundika area I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends. My thoughts are now with the victims and their families."

The accident comes after another Mombasa-bound bus, belonging to Tahmeed, burst into flames mid-journey on February 4, 2024. 

The incident, which occurred along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, saw all 48 passengers onboard evacuated to safety.
