The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), on Saturday night conducted a crackdown on shisha users in popular nightclubs within the city arresting nine people.

According to the Authority, the night crackdown was conducted in two nightclubs in the Eastlands area of Nairobi.

In the first night club two individuals were arrested, while the authority seized shisha bongs used to consume the illegal product.

“18 shisha bongs and assorted flavours and shisha preparation paraphernalia were seized. Two individuals were also arrested for the offence of selling shisha in contravention of legal notice 292 of 2017”, read NACADA’s statement.

Further, the authority confirmed having extended the crackdown to a second nightclub at 1:00 a.m, in Muthaiga where seven more were arrested.

“The team extended the crackdown to another club, where 60 shisha bongs, 126 pieces of assorted flavours, and assorted paraphernalia used in shisha preparation were confiscated,” explained NACADA.

In the raid conducted at the second nightclub, the NACADA officers arrested the establishment's manager alongside the sellers and users.

All the individuals arrested were detained at the Jogoo Road Police Station awaiting a court appearance on Monday morning.

The Superintendent of Police and Head of Enforcement at NACADA, Nicholas Koskei, cautioned the public over the consumption of hard drugs under the guise of smoking shisha.

He also requested the public to participate in giving information to the police on clubs and  private apartments offering the contraband

The authority has been staging crackdowns in various parts of the country culminating in a trail of arrests.

45 people were arrested in Mombasa, on January 14 when the authority conducted the crackdown in two residential areas.

More people had also been arrested in Kilimani in December 2023, at a popular joint in the area.
