Several kids living at a children's home in Mradi, Embakasi, have been left homeless after a fire razed down the facility on Sunday night.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, formally Paul Ongili, revealed that the fire was devastating and reduced the entire home into ashes.

According to reports, the fire broke out at around midnight but its cause is yet to be determined.

"Sad news as fire razed down a children’s Home in Mradi, Embakasi. The helpless kids have been left homeless. Continue praying for us in Embakasi East," he stated.

A video that made rounds on social media showed a huge cloud of fire razing down premises at the home but the extent of damage is yet to be established.

The incident came a few hours after Governor Johnson Sakaja visited a team of firefighters nursing injuries after responding to a collapsed wall in Kariobangi.

"Our Firefighters put a lot at stake to conduct response to emergencies across the city. We greatly appreciate their industry and sacrifice," he explained.

"This afternoon, I visited two of our officers who were injured in Kariobangi after a wall collapsed during response to a fire incident and are recuperating in hospital. We support them and encourage all our valiant officers to keep doing all they can to save lives and property."

The fire breakout marks the second major tragedy in Embakasi less than a month after a gas explosion left seven people dead and many others nursing injuries.

An illegal gas refilling plant exploded at the beginning of February 2024 affecting nearby residential buildings.

The explosion culminated in a huge fire displacing many residents most of whom sought refuge at the Embakasi Social Hall.

“The government’s relief efforts extend beyond immediate shelter needs, focusing on long-term support for the affected families,” Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura told the press at the time.

In our flagship newsletter, the Evening Brief, Nairobi County Disaster Management Officer Bramwell Simiyu confirmed that a total of 761 individuals were affected in the incident. He further noted that Nairobi County firefighters respond to at least two fire incidents every day around the city.
