Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry landed in Puerto Rico on Tuesday, March 5, following speculations over his whereabouts after he jetted out of Kenya this past weekend.

Sources privy to the matter, who spoke to CNN, revealed that United States federal agents from the Customs and Border Protection had assumed control of the situation as the Haitian leader seeks to return to his conflict-riddled country.

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island located approximately 600 kilometres east of Haiti.

Furthermore, the Associated Press reported that Henry discreetly arrived on a chartered flight in New Jersey from Kenya after signing a deal with President William Ruto's administration to deploy 1,000 Kenyan officers in a peacekeeping mission to the country.

The Prime Minister was scheduled to head towards the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, but the flight changed routes midair and diverted to Puerto Rico.

It is, however, unclear how long Prime Minister Henry will stay in Puerto Rico and whether he will return to his country.

Following the chaos experienced in Haiti in the past week, several countries, including the United States of America and the Dominican Republic, have suspended all flights bound for the country.

This occurred after former police officer Jimmy Cherizier led a federation of gangs and seized control of the country's main airport, as well as various government agencies, shortly after Henry arrived in Kenya.

The chaos resulted in the deaths of four police officers and the release of thousands of inmates from two prisons as the gang took control of the majority of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

According to Cherizier, the goal is to destabilise the system and overthrow Henry's rule. Furthermore, the gang leader warned the Prime Minister against returning to the country.

On Sunday, Haiti Finance Minister Patrick Boivert declared a state of emergency owing to the violence that left 300,000 people homeless.
