Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore on Wednesday, March 6, revealed that the government was on track to providing 9,000 Kenyans with certificates to work in the Affordable Housing Program.
According to the national government, the certificates are offered at 5 National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) branches.
Kenyans who have never attended tertiary institutions will be given certificates of prior learning to show that they have the necessary skills to work towards actualising the program.
This was communicated during a meeting between CS Bore and members of the Board and management of the NITA led by board chairperson Aden Noor.
The branches of NITA are; Textile Training Institute, Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Athi River.
Additionally, Kenyans can receive their certificates from NITA-accredited centres which can be accessed at www.nita.go.ke/ar/component/edocman/accredited-trade-centres-2022.html
Already, NITA-accredited training sites have assessed and certified more than 400 workers in the Ruiru and Kibra Affordable Housing sites.
The targetted 9,000 Kenyans will work in 30 Affordable Housing sites across the country.
“NITA has been involved in the certification of 435 workers under Recognition of Prior Learning among many other achievements,” the Ministry of Labour stated.
Apart from offering prior learning certificates to casual workers in the Affordable Housing sector, 313,179 Kenyans have further been assessed to work in different fields.
For the 2023/2024 Financial Year, NITA seeks to assess 80,000 workers with a large portion of the number being Kenyans seeking to work abroad.
“NITA has established a Directorate of Labour Migration which is responsible for Global market intelligence for migrant workers and Skills development for migrant workers,” it was revealed.
Kenyans seeking to travel abroad will be equipped with core skills and pre-departure training developed targeting specific countries of destination.
