The Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company has announced service interruptions throughout the entire city following a leak experienced in one of its water lines.

In a statement dated Thursday, March 7, the utility firm outlined its plans to undertake corrective measures on the leak, necessitating the decision to temporarily cut off the water supply.

According to Nairobi Water, the interruptions will begin on Thursday at 10 pm.

"The Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd wishes to inform its esteemed customers of water supply interruption to the City of Nairobi from 10:00 pm today March 7, 2024, to 3:00 am on March 8, 2024.

"The supply interruption is due to a leak on the pipeline from Ng’ethu Treatment Works to Gigiri Pumping Station. The leak is at a place called Raiyani, close to Thuita/Kibichoi," read the statement in part.

At the time of publication, the cause of the leak was yet to be established.

However, it was also highlighted that only two areas within the city would not be affected during the five-hour interruptions.

Certain areas, such as the Central Business District (CBD) and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), will continue to have access to water despite the service interruptions.

Meanwhile, Kenyans are encouraged to remain calm as officials work diligently to rectify the leak as swiftly as possible.

"The work to undertake the repairs is urgent to avoid undermining the integrity of the water pipeline that serves the City and therefore necessitates shutting down the supply for five (5) hours," read the statement in part.

Service interruptions have previously been reported by Nairobi Water for maintenance work.

Usually, the notices are issued days before the services are interrupted. This will be the first time this year when there is an abrupt interruption of supply.
