Ruto Appoints 16 Women Ambassadors to Facilitate Gender Parity in Govt

In a move aimed at appreciating the role of women in governance, President William Ruto while marking the International Day of Women on March 8, announced the appointment of 16 women leaders to ambassadorial positions.

While addressing a women's conference at Moi Stadium in Embu, Ruto announced the appointment of ten women to serve as ambassadors, along with an additional six women appointed as deputy ambassadors, to represent Kenya on the international stage.

According to Ruto, the appointment of the 16 women to take on the prestigious diplomatic roles was part of the celebrations and a gift to women as they marked International Women's Day.

The head of state revealed the govt would amend the constitution to allow for the inclusion of women in governance and enhance gender parity.

He further noted that he had written a notice to the national assembly to consider amending the law to incorporate more positions for women leadership in the country.

"I want to announce to all women that later today, I will receive a detailed report from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) and one of the key issues on the report is the two-third gender rule," Ruto stated.

"We have decided as a party and as a government that the national assembly through the parliamentary group and all the structures that we have will make sure we pass the matter," the head of state added.

Ruto further lauded women cabinet secretaries, noting that they were among the top performers in implementing the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.

While elaborating his sentiments, the head of state noted that crucial government projects were being headed by women, for instance, the affordable housing programme which is led by cabinet secretary, Alice Wahome. 

President Ruto's latest announcement comes a day after he hinted at the United Democratic Movement (UDA) party fielding a female running mate in the future.

Ruto speaking during the Women Governors' Caucus G7 Strategy Summit held in Nairobi, Ruto stated that the move was to enhance gender parity in the party.

"We must as a party lead in front and we must make it in the roots that when Rigathi Gachagua and myself when we reach the future and agree between ourselves," Ruto stated.
