Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja clarified the allegations of Nairobi City County officers handcuffing a driver inside his lorry on Saturday, March 9.

Addressing the matter, the governor stated that the man was not cuffed by City inspectorate officers but by an assistant chief.

The governor, who condemned the act, noted that the matter had been escalated to County Commissioner David Wanyonyi to get to the bottom of it as Chiefs fall within his structure.

“That was wrong and inhumane. We have escalated the issue to County Commissioner David Wanyonyi to get to the bottom of it as Chiefs fall in his structure,” Sakaja remarked.

In the video that has been shared widely, the frustrated driver claims he was handcuffed by a group of Nairobi City officers on allegations of blocking the road.

Even so, the driver while defending himself, insisted that he did not block the road but was rather obstructed by vehicles in front of him.

"Currently, jobs are scarce, and just when I found a job, I was handcuffed for supposedly blocking the road, yet it was the vehicle in front of me that had blocked the road," the distraught man noted.

"The county askaris were here, they spoke to me, and we reached an understanding. But there is one referred to as chief who handcuffed me," he added.

Meanwhile, Babu Owino, while reacting to the video, accused the governor of failing to address the matter urgently.

This is not the first time that city kanjos have been accused of frustrating a city resident. In a similar incident three months ago, a video of a hawker weeping uncontrollably after the Askaris destroyed his stock surfaced.

The groundnut seller could be seen seeking solace in the arms of a well-wisher while staring at the goods spread across the street.

Governor Sakaja later met the seller but maintained that the young Burundian national had contravened rules to which traders are expected to adhere.
