Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company Limited (MAVWASCO) has increased water tariffs for financial years 2023/24, 2024/25, and 2025/26.
This was communicated through a Gazette Notice dated March 8, 2024. The changes will affect the Nairobi environs of Syokimau, Mlolongo, Athi River, Kinanie and Kyumbi.
In the new charges, Kenyans will pay up to Ksh100,000 as a water deposit depending on the consumer's category.
“After considering the application, the written and oral submissions by all stakeholders during the consultation period, and based on the latest available data, the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) has determined an upward tariff review for MAVWASCO is justified in order to improve service delivery, operate sustainably and protect consumer interests by meeting the tariff conditions,” the Gazette notice read in part.
Domestic consumers will pay the least deposit fee of Ksh2,500 while heavy industries using more than 300 cubic meters will pay Ksh100,000.
Multi-dwelling units using between 4 and 21 units will pay between Ksh5,000 and Ksh20,000 as deposit fees.
Retail shops using less than 10 cubic meters will pay a deposit of Ksh3,000 while those who use more than that will be charged a Ksh3,500 deposit.
Bars and restaurants will pay a deposit fee of between Ksh4,000 and Ksh6,000 depending on the amount of water usage.
Hospitals using more than 150 cubic meters of water will be forced to part with a deposit fee of Ksh20,000.
For academic institutions, schools using less than 200 cubic meters will be charged Ksh10,000 with those using more forced to pay Ksh20,000.
Those at construction sites must pay Ksh15,000 and should the amount of water being used exceed 300 cubic meters, the amount will be revised to Ksh50,000.
Medium industries using between 200 and 300 cubic meters will pay Ksh50,000 deposit fee with water kiosks mandated to pay Ksh5,000.
While Mlolongo and Syokimau are considered as Nairobi Satelite towns, the area is under Machakos County jurisdiction.
