President William Ruto met Kenya Kwanza Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) at the State House ahead of the grassroots election scheduled for next month.

In a statement after the meeting on Monday morning, the Head of State noted that the event was aimed at exchanging views between the Executive and grassroots leaders.

The meeting, which was attended by high-ranking leaders within the coalition, marked a crucial meeting between the Kenya Kwanza leadership and the MCAs as President Ruto charts a roadmap towards retaining his seat in 2027.

"We are routinely exchanging views with grassroots leaders so that we can accelerate the accomplishment of our country’s development agenda," stated the Head of State.

The meeting was attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Council of Governors Chairperson and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.

Other leaders present were National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah and Senator Aaron Cheruiyot.

In an earlier letter, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala indicated that the meeting was aimed at taking stock of the government's performance since Kenya Kwanza ascended to the Presidency.

The meeting kicked off at 7:00 am.

"The caucus is expected to engage and reflect on the success of the Kenya Kwanza government and to deliberate on the forthcoming coalition activities," read the invitation letter sent to the MCAs.

The grassroots elections, which had been in the pipeline since last year and initially planned to take place on December 9, 2023, have suffered numerous delays as the ruling coalition continues to tinker with its plans to accommodate all voices within the political outfit.

At the time, speculation was rife that the postponement was necessitated by infighting within the coalition.

The Kenya Kwanza leadership resolved to hold the elections on three separate dates in April this year as opposed to holding the same event at once.

Mt Kenya Discontent

The event comes amid discontent by some Kenya Kwanza leaders from Mt Kenya region, allied to Amani National Congress (ANC), who accused Kenya Kwanza of sidelining them in revenue distribution.

The leaders, while addressing the press on Sunday, indicated that despite boosting the coalition with over 300,000 votes, they were yet to receive a share of 30 per cent of funds disbursed to the party.

They claimed that they had worked consistently to boost their coalition's image in Mt Kenya during campaigns that led to the August 2022 victory.
