On Monday, March 11, Chief Magistrate Tomas Nzyoki of the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court presided over a case wherein it was revealed that a woman had forged a diploma to secure a job as a civil servant.
The woman forged a Diploma in Business Information and Technology, which she then used to apply for a position at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
Impressed by her presented qualifications, REREC offered her a competent salary of over Ksh100,000 per month.
It took investigations by the EACC to determine the lady never attended a local university which she had credited as having awarded her a diploma.
She was subsequently dismissed from her position as Supply Chain Management Officer at REREC as investigations gained pace.
Once presented before the court, she was accused of five offences all related to forging her diploma and subsequent benefits earned courtesy of the forgery.
The charges include forging the certificate, uttering a false document and giving false information to a person employed in the public service.
Other offences included deceiving the Principal and fraudulent acquisition of public property, being the cumulative salary earned for 3 months.
The court heard that the lady hastily resigned 90 days into the job when she got wind that EACC was on her case.
She was released on a cash bail of Ksh200,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh500,000 with one surety of a similar amount.
EACC has indicated that the money she earned in those three months will be forfeited to the State.
The matter will be mentioned on Monday 25th March 2024 for pre-trail directions.
On Monday, March 11, EACC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Twalib Mbarak ordered the immediate stoppage in the channelling of salary payments to civil servants with forged papers.
