A witness, Dennis Mokaya, broke down at the Senate on Wednesday during the impeachment hearing of Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda.
The man was testifying against the DG alleging that he and his father allegedly paid a bribe of Ksh 800,000 to the Deputy Governor to influence the outcome of a job interview at the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company Limited (GWASCO).
Mokaya explained that he had applied for the position of Commercial Manager at GWASCO. At this juncture, his father allegedly made an arrangement to offer the Deputy Governor a bribe to ensure that his son's application sailed through on account of them being long-time friends.
He broke down alleging that his family suffered immensely after completing the payment since his father, ostensibly sold business assets which was run by his wife in Ruai.
Mokaya stated that he lost his lifetime savings as a result of the alleged transaction. During the proceedings he claimed that he was forced to relocate after failing to secure the said position.
He further narrated that his wife, who protested against payment of the bribe was devastated when he failed to secure the position.
“My wife did not take it easy. At that time, she was expectant after twelve years of trying and she ended up suffering a miscarriage,” explained the witness.
In a suprising turn of events, Mokaya’s parents are expected to show up at the Senate on Thursday where they will testify in defense of the Deputy Governor.
The DG’s case, on the other hand, is anchored on the fact that Mokaya’s parents were repaying a loan owed to him, a stand that the witness is refuting.
However, the Senate has grilled Mokaya stating that he was admitting to the Senate that he was a criminal since he was planning to gain undue advantage by paying the alleged bribe.
Additionally, the Senate questioned the witness after he was accused of having a gambling problem which raised questions on his character and financial management.
The impeachment hearing is expected to continue with the case proceeding on Thursday.
Dr. Robert Monda was impeached by the Kisii County Assembly on accusations of gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
