Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has penned a letter to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome protesting the spike in the number of high-rise buildings in the neighbourhood.

In the letter obtained by Kenyans.co.ke dated Tuesday, March 20, the MCA narrows down on a specific businessman he accused of grabbing land to set up commercial shops illegally.

He accused the tycoon of masterminding the grabbing of two other parcels and then sending goons to harass him when he attempted to address the issue.

In the latest case, Alai claimed that the tycoon had taken over parcels along Mwingi Road in Nairobi and fell down trees, some as old as 50 years, to pave the way for the construction project.

He accused some Nairobi leaders of conspiring with the tycoon to bypass policy systems and award him the parcels.

"This concerning development has not only led to the illegal felling of 40 to 50-year-old trees but is also contributing to the degradation of the aesthetic, value, and ecological balance of the Kileleshwa neighborhood," Alai stated.

"This situation is antithetical to the global leadership our country is aspiring to under President William Ruto's administration, especially in combating climate change and global warming."

Alai also accused the businessman of hiring goons to frustrate his efforts to ensure that all approvals given were in line with legal provisions.

The MCA was on Sunday involved in an altercation with armed goons who he claimed had been sent to guard the property in Kileleshwa.

He noted that he had gone to the site after receiving complaints from area residents over noise pollution despite a ban on all construction activities on Sunday.

"The aggressive and unlawful actions taken against me when I sought to address these issues, including physical assault by individuals hired by (the businessman), highlight the urgent need for intervention by your esteemed office. It is evident that there is a blatant disregard for the law and the well-being of the Kileleshwa community, with certain individuals within the county administration providing protection for these illicit activities," he added.

In the letter sent to the IG, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and two others, Alai wants all construction activities on the parcel halted and investigations into the acquisition of the property initiated.

This comes as complaints mount over the rapidly changing face of Kilimani, Kileleshwa, and Lavington, which were once viewed as high-end neighbourhoods.

Residents lament that too many high-rise apartments are turning the areas into concrete slums.
