President William Ruto on Thursday, March 21, revealed that there were serial litigants in the country who were blackmailing the national government.
Speaking during the launch of the Medium Term Plan IV at State House, Nairobi, Ruto regretted that the litigants who keep taking the government to court harbour the intentions of extorting the Executive.
The Head of State noted that this was a level of impunity that would not be tolerated by his administration.
He stated that it was a tragedy that there were few individuals who had made it a career to challenge government policies in court.
“You cannot believe it, that after they have obtained stays and they have obtained injunctions against policies they have the audacity and temerity to come and look for government officials and tell them, if you talk to us nicely we are going to remove the injunctions,” he exposed.
The President singled out the personal health coverage plan and the affordable housing programme as some of the policies targeted by extortionists.
Ruto revealed that to end such impunity, his administration would take necessary steps to empower constitutional offices dealing with impunity.
This includes; the Office of the Attorney General, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
According to the President, empowering such offices would ensure that the nation has the requisite capacity to protect the resources and finances of the Kenyan people.
In January 2024, President Ruto accused the Judiciary of colluding with serial litigants to throw out the Housing Levy Act.
On January 22, there was a momentary truce between the Judiciary and Executive after President Ruto hosted Chief Justice Martha Koome at State House, Nairobi.
In the meeting that was also attended by AG Justin Muturi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and Council of Governors Chair Anne Waiguru, the leaders struck an agreement that the three arms of government would work in unison to eradicate corruption.
