The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on Monday, March 25, announced that it had closed a section of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

According to KAA, the temporary closure of JKIA Terminal 1E was occasioned due to a fire incident that occurred in the section.

In an update to the public, KAA revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical fault at the busy airport.

Firefighters stationed at the airport were quick to contain the situation and as such, no injuries or casualties resulted from the incident.

“Following this, power to Terminal 1E has been temporarily shut off as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all within our premises,” travellers and other stakeholders were assured.

“To mitigate any inconvenience this may cause, all flight arrival operations have been redirected to Terminal 1A until further notice.”

KAA cognizant that the airport is the largest in the East African region, remarked that it would put in measures to ensure the safety and security of all passengers, staff and stakeholders.

This will be achieved through taking necessary steps to minimise disruptions caused by the temporary closure.

While there is no definite time when the terminal will be opened, KAA announced they were working around the clock to return to normal operations as swiftly as possible.

There were no immediate reports of passengers stranded due to the inconvenience.

The terminal closure happened at a time when most of the Nairobi area and its metropolitan flooded due to heavy rains throughout Sunday night.
