The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding potential power disruptions and five other impacts that Kenyans could face during the rainy season, expected to persist until June.

In a seasonal forecast, it was emphasised that the ongoing rains may result in power disruptions in certain areas of the country. The Department also underscored the need for energy stakeholders to invest in the sector to mitigate such occurrences.

On the other hand, it was noted that there would be a likelihood of flash floods which will hamper the flow of traffic in various parts of the country.

Notably, transportation in parts of Nairobi was affected on Monday after overnight rainfall.

"There is a possibility of isolated storms occurring, which could result in flash floods, particularly in the low-lying areas of the northern regions, the Southeastern lowlands, the Coastal region, parts of the Central and South Rift Valley, and inadequately drained urban areas.

"It is strongly recommended that the general public refrain from walking or driving through flooded areas or attempting to cross swollen rivers to prevent loss of lives. It is also advisable for relevant authorities to implement measures addressing flood-related concerns, including the prepositioning of both food and non-food supplies, as well as resource mobilization," Kenya Met noted.

Health

In the same breath, Kenyans were also cautioned to be cautious of water-borne diseases which occur during the floods. Stagnant water may also see a rise in mosquitos which contribute to diseases like malaria.

"To mitigate these risks, it is advisable for relevant authorities to strengthen disease surveillance and early detection systems. Additionally, they should distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets to areas with a higher risk of disease transmission," read the advisory in part.

Agriculture

Kenya Met noted that with the start of the long rains, farmers across the country will participate in various farming activities.

However, it was noted that increased rainfall could lead to soil erosion which will eventually affect food production.

"In light of this, the public is advised to adopt sound agricultural practices, including the implementation of soil conservation measures, to help safeguard and preserve the environment," read the advisory in part.

Lighting

As the rains continue, it was projected that some regions would experience lighting even as Kenyans were advised against seeking shelter under trees or near metallic structures.

The regions likely to experience lighting include; Kisii, Kisumu, Nandi, Kakamega, and Bungoma (specifically the Mt Elgon areas).
