The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Tuesday, March 26, announced that it had halted Sacco deductions for teachers from Bungoma County.

This was revealed by TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia during a meeting with the Senate Trade Committee.

TSC officers had been summoned to the Senate to deliberate a statement sought by Bungoma Senator David Wakoli concerning the deductions.

Wakoli had requested to know why deductions cut from Bungoma teachers' pay were directed to a Sacco accused of embezzling Ksh12 billion.

CEO Macharia told the Senate Trade Committee that TSC only affects the stoppage of deductions upon application.

“She added that monthly deductions for 1,165 teachers from Bungoma County in favour of the Sacco had been stopped,” Senate updated teachers.

Earlier, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah had asked TSC to halt the remissions arguing that teachers had withdrawn from the Sacco which is on the verge of collapse.

Omtatah remarked that salaries and other savings were teachers' property and hence needed to be safeguarded.

The Sacco ran into problems three years ago after some of its members realised that they were unable to make any withdrawals from their savings.

Additionally, teachers were denied loan facilities despite having active accounts with the Sacco.

An audit team appointed in April 2022 unearthed the finding that Ksh7 billion had been loaned out to ghost members.

Questions were also raised on how millions of shillings were withdrawn from a single teller at a Nakuru branch.
