Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday announced the government's plans to introduce reforms to improve the overall welfare of officers working with the National Police Service (NPS).

Speaking after visiting Juja OCS Alex Misoi who is recuparating at Avenue Hospital after an attack by unknown assailants on Monday, the DP noted that the govt would implement the reforms beginning July 1.

He further promised that works were underway to ensure officers injured in the line of duty would get insurance.

According to the Deputy President, the families of officers risking their lives while on duty will also be catered for in plans moving forward.

“We have reforms that will be implemented from July, and we are even looking at the issues of insurance for officers injured in the line of duty, and to ensure officers risking their lives have their families protected,” Gachagua noted.

Stung by recent attacks on officers and police stations, Gachagua promised to speed up the implementation, directing police commanders to take stern action against Kenyans attacking police officers and raiding police stations.

“The people need to know that you cannot attack police officers, and we will not allow it,” he stated.

“Commander, you must move swiftly, and clean up that village, because this impunity is of the highest order, and not acceptable,” Gachagua added.

The police commander investigating the attack on the OCS noted that 52 people linked to the incident had been arrested and presented in court on Tuesday.

“Over the night we had a round-up operation and arrested 52 people in connection to the village involved in all this, and this is something we are going to sustain,” the officer in charge noted.

The police boss was on April 1 injured by an assailant who targeted  an arrow at him in the Gachochoro area, Kiambu County.

The officer was leading a raid on an illicit brew den.

Following the incident, the officer was rushed to Thika Level Five Hospital, before being transferred to a private health facility for surgery. The surgeon in charge has confirmed that the surgery was successful, and the officer was in stable condition.
