Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza on Wednesday announced that she had joined the United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA).

Mwangaza who ascended to the top county seat on an independent ticket has until now not been affiliated with any party officially despite throwing her weight behind President William Ruto.

Welcoming her to the party, Cleopas Malala the party's Secretary General confirmed that the Governor will attempt to retain her position in 2027 on the party's ticket.

To that effect, Malala urged party members to embrace the Governor and to support her political ambitions.

The UDA party members further added that it was time for reconciliation in Meru County which has been rocked by political wrangles.

Affirming this stance, Embu Governor, Cecily Mbarire who is also the Chairperson of the UDA Party added that the party would support the Governor in the quest to quell the squabbles in the county.

“I take this opportunity as the UDA Chair, and a neighbour of Meru County, to state that the time to heal Meru County is now here,” stated Cecily Mbarire.

Mbarire, however, noted that the political squabbles in Meru County had negatively affected Meru's development and that of neighbouring counties as well.

In her speech, Governor Mwangaza appreciated the opportunity to join the party and exuded confidence that her bid to retain the seat on a UDA ticket in the next elections will be successful.

"In 2027, I will be a candidate on a UDA ticket. I have come to tell the residents of Meru County that this is the sign, you have been questioning me about for the 2027 elections," explained Mwangaza.

As a politician not attached to any party, Mwangaza has faced political turmoil almost at every turn, including being impeached twice by Meru Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

Mwangaza first secured an elective seat in 2017 after clinching the Meru Woman Representative seat. She would later be elected as Meru County Governor in 2022.
