Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, April 9, gunned down a suspected gang member who is said to have robbed a firearm from an Officer Commanding Vihiga Police Station.

The DCI officers reportedly cornered the suspect at his hideout in the Mwiki area of Kasarani where he was residing alongside two of his accomplices.

Following the sudden raid by the detectives, a gunfight ensued between the gang members and the detectives from the operations unit.

As the wrangle intensified, two of the gang members fled, leaving one suspect behind. However, the remaining suspect was shot dead after attempting to stage a fight with the officers.

According to detectives, the gang in December last year attacked and violently robbed the Vihiga Police Station OCS of his gun.

The officer was attacked while parking his car in Vihiga's Majengo market where the gang descended on him with daggers and left him fatally injured.

“They then disappeared with his Jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition,” the detective noted.

Following the robbery incident, detectives immediately launched a probe and after days of surveillance, detectives received an intelligence report through its hotline.

It was a tip-off from an anonymous caller who reported having spotted a suspicious car occupied by three armed men at the Kenyatta Univeristy farm in Mwiki.

“Stealthily approaching the scene, the hawkshaws realized it was the same suspects who had evaded several police dragnets after staging some attacks around the Capital,” read part of the DCI report.

The DC officers went ahead to raid the gang's hideout where the suspects were nabbed and urged to surrender, Instead, the suspects lodged a counterattack on the officers, prompting an immediate response.

After gunning down the suspect, the officers moved his body to the City Mortuary pending identification.
