Police in Nandi County were Friday morning forced to lob tear-gas canisters and fire in the air after irate residents stormed Jubilee Party offices in the county.
According to sources, angry youth stormed the party’s offices over claims of rigging amidst confusion over delays in commencement of the nomination exercise in the county.
Speaking at a meeting that brought together Jubilee aspirants in Uasin Gishu County, Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter alleged that a section of officials working in Deputy President William Ruto's office were interfering with Jubilee Party affairs.
Keter claimed that the forces in DP Ruto’s office were to blame for the delays that had marred the first day of the ruling party's primaries.
"We demand that they leave office for interfering with Jubilee Party affairs. We want a free, fair and democratic process so that we can have leaders that we want," Keter said.
He accused the group of spoiling the Jubilee party and demanded that the unnamed individuals resign from the office of the DP.
His remarks were supported by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago who vowed that the Jubilee primaries in the region would not proceed as scheduled citin a shortage of ballot papers.
Mandago cried foul that the delays and the insufficient voting materials were jeopardizing the whole nomination exercise.
He pointed out that they had registered over 100,000 new voters but the ballot papers provided by the party were too few to continue with the voting.
"It is time we crack the whip. We registered more than 100,000 new voters so we must have enough ballot papers," said Mandago.
The Jubilee nomination exercise in Uasin Gishu was also marred by chaos after residents stormed the MV Patel voting centers demanding for voting materials to be availed for them to cast their votes.
The materials were delayed after it was alleged that some voting papers were stolen en-route to Eldoret town.
